Ft. Lauderdale, FL - In the first Youth National Team Trials game, the Red team defeated the Blue team, 7-4, in a pre-determined 10 inning exhibition.
The Red team never trailed, and were guided by leadoff hitter L.J. Hoes (Mitchelville, MD) who reached base in his first four plate appearances (3-4, BB, 2 runs). The lone player with multiple extra-base hits was Kyle Skipworth (Riverside, CA) (2-2, 2 doubles, RBI, Run), who came off the bench to play (3B) for the Red team. Infielder Harold Martinez (Miami, FL) collected 3 hits and 3 RBI (3-5).
The Winning pitcher was Ryan Weber (St. Petersburg, FL) who went 2 innings allowing an unearned run, in relief of Ray Hanson (Long Beach, CA) (3 IP, 2 R). Ray Delphey (Tampa, FL) earned the save, pitching the final two innings (0 R, 4 K's).
In the loss for the Blue team, relief pitcher Tyler Hibbs (Odenton, MD) (3 IP, 1 R, 5 K's) was effective, and also went (2-2) offensively. Pitchers combined for 24 strikeouts in the game.
All of this week's Trials games have been re-scheduled for 10:30 AM starts at Nova Southeastern University.
The Youth National Team Trials currently has 36 players (16 and under) competing for 18 roster spots to be announced on the night of Friday, July 28. The 18 members of the 2006 Youth National Team will remain in Ft. Lauderdale for five days of training before departing for the COPABE Youth Pan-American Tournament to be held in Barquisimeto, Venezuela from August 4 - 13.
