  • The 2006 Youth National Team lost its first exhibition game, 6-2, to Broward Community College on Monday night. Team USA had beaten them 9-8 on Sunday night in the first exhibition, played at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL.

Starter Brock Duke (Salem, UT) absorbed the loss, yielding a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning to the Seahawks catcher, accounting for all of the runs he allowed in his three innings. That proved to be all Broward Community College would need. Duke finished with five strikeouts.

Offensively for Team USA, they earned nine walks, and three players reached base three times - Dimitri De La Fuente (West Covina, CA), Jaff Decker (Phoenix, AZ), and Mychal Givens (Tampa, FL).

The team had the tying or potential winning run at the plate multiple teams late, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunities against the older team.

Two more exhibition games remain (Tuesday and Wednesday night) before the team heads down to Venezuela.

For the last week, 36 invitees competed in the Youth National Team Trials in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, for half the number of available roster spots, which are now filled.

TEAM USA strives for its first COPABE Gold Medal since 2000 at the Youth level. The tournament begins on August 4th in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
