The 2006 Youth National Team lost its second exhibition game, 14-10, to the "X" Team, a collection of high school stars in and around the Davie, FL area, played at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL.
The teams combined for 24 runs on 32 hits, with four home runs included. The US was led by infielder Harold Martinez (Miami, FL), who hit two homers and doubled, in his first three at-bats, driving in three. 1st baseman D.J. Hicks (Altamonte Springs, FL) had three hits, and infielder Mychal Givens (Tampa, FL) reached base four straight times.
The pitching couldn't contain the bats of the "X" team in this exhibition, as they poured in six runs against starter Tyler Johnson (Trussville, AL). Team USA responded with a six-run 3rd inning to gain the lead 7-6, but it proved to be their only lead of the night.
It marked the final tune-up game for Team USA, before departing for Venezuela on Thursday to participate in the Pan-American Championship tournament. The team will practice on Wednesday.
For the last week, 36 invitees competed in the Youth National Team Trials in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, for half the number of available roster spots, which are now filled.
TEAM USA strives for its first COPABE Gold Medal since 2000 at the Youth level. The tournament begins on August 4th in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
