Tuesday, April 15 - To honor the enduring impact of Jackie Robinson and his legacy, Major League Baseball has established April 15th as "Jackie Robinson Day" throughout the Major Leagues. On April 15, 1947, Robinson became the first African American player in Major League Baseball, shattering a barrier that had kept players of color from playing in the Major Leagues for more than half a century.
Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11 - MLB has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen Foundation as part of the Breast Cancer Strikeout Challenge. On Mother's Day, MLB will support SGK to raise awareness and funds for women's cancer services including screening, treatment, research and education. Major League Baseball Charities will make a financial contribution to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and highlight stories of cancer survivors from the baseball family on MLB.com in the days leading up to Mother's Day. A player from each team will serve as the player representative. Last year, Chad Cordero served as our player rep.
June 3 and Father's Day, June 15 - Major League Baseball is supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation and its Home Run Challenge, centered on Father's Day. For the past several years all Clubs have supported the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the public charity dedicated to finding the cure for cancer of the prostate. The Nationals will work with PCF to provide in-stadium awareness including a player representative, run a PSA, provide information to fans, a game-day program advertisement, run an in-stadium auction which will benefit PCF, and participate in a pre-game recognition. All players on Father's Day wear blue wristbands and blue ribbons on their uniforms. There will also be a blue ribbon painted on the field.
Summer-long - MLB, the American Academy of Dermatology and the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention are teaming up for the 8th Annual Play Smart When It Comes to the Sun program, a skin cancer awareness initiative. The goal is to increase awareness of the program and bring attention to the fact that MLB and the 30 Clubs are committed to the fight against skin cancer.
July 4 - Major League Baseball and its Clubs, in conjunction with the Department of Defense, will celebrate the Fourth of July with a series of special patriotic activities scheduled for Friday, July 4th. The Nationals will participate in a variety of activities designed to highlight our partnership with DOD, the America Supports You Campaign which offers support to soldiers fighting overseas, the USO and the branches of our military. A special MLB/Fourth of July logo is displayed on ceremonial first-pitch baseballs, home plates, pitching rubbers, line-up cards and on the sides of the bases. The logo design incorporates the Stars and Stripes MLB-silhouetted batter logo and the phrase "Baseball Salutes America."
August 12-September 1 - The Commissioner's Initiative for Kids is an annual program scheduled to take place from mid-August through Labor Day. The goal is to give kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the thrill of seeing a Major League Baseball game. A number of tickets will be distributed to schools, youth organizations, community groups and military outlets in the Greater D.C. area.
September 3 - Major League Baseball wants to continue to heighten the awareness and significance of the Roberto Clemente Award by celebrating Roberto Clemente Day. Roberto Clemente Day is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd. As part of the celebration, the Nationals will announce our nominee for the Award along with a check presentation from John Hancock Financial Services to the local winner. The Roberto Clemente Award is given annually to a player who demonstrates the values that Clemente displayed in his commitment to community and his helping of others. Our nominee for 2007 was Ryan Zimmerman.
September 20 - Boys & Girls Clubs of America is the Official Charity of Major League Baseball. As part of our partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Nationals will host children from area Clubhouses on Saturday, September 20 at the game versus the San Diego Padres and participate in events that will take place earlier in the day.
